What better way to celebrate your original wedding day day than with a virtual photoshoot and custom cake by Guilty Pleasures Bakeshop + Bar.
Before I get into that though, here’s just a little back story on how it started.
Back in March when Covid-19 became serious and all weddings for this summer became questionable, I started coming up with a plan. With that plan, I also decided to include free Original Wedding Day photoshoots for all my couples.
Originally, they were supposed to be in person and outside but when non-essential businesses were forced to close temporarily, it just wasn’t possible.
A couple weeks ago, I started virtual photoshoots for the dance photography side of my business (Dance by aKaiserPhoto, check it out HERE), a trend that’s been going on for a few weeks now (so I can’t take credit). At first, though, I didn’t find the images produced (using facetime camera) were anywhere near ‘quality’… So, I just couldn’t get on board with them. BUT… Then I saw one photo a photographer shared (I can’t remember who), taken over facetime on an iPhone, but taken with their professional camera after. I thought that was brilliant!
It was something that truly captured this time in our lives – social distancing at home, connecting through Skype, Zoom or Facetime, being online and even more glued to our phones.
By taking the photo of the actual image on my phone with my camera, it allowed me to get creative after the fact. Backgrounds, colours, textures… Anything I could find around the house. It truly felt like I was creating art again. My career, my hobby, my passion.
The day after I added these shoots to my “postponing” plan, I was chatting with Justine from Guilty Pleasures about them, and without hesitation, she offered a free two-person cake (made with their original wedding colours) for every couple of mine that had to postpone their wedding due to Covid-19. AMAZING RIGHT? I think so!!
This added a whole other level to the experience… Original Wedding Day photoshoot with an Original Wedding Day cake eating. I say eating, cause we didn’t want them to cut it. We wanted them to just dig in and keep the formal cutting for their original date.
Anyway, enough about all that! I want to talk about Hailey and Guerino’s virtual photoshoot!
I picked up the cake (curbside) and dropped it off the night before (contact free). The next day, it was shoot time and this was my first time doing one with a couple and where I didn’t have someone as a “tripod”.
I knew it would be a challenge, but all of us were up for it. I also knew it was totally going to be fun!
Side note: It was cold and the recent snowfall was still around. So let’s just say, this weather wasn’t ideal for a wedding anyways (totally made it a little easier to swallow lol).
To get things started, I had them tape their iPhone to a stand. This allowed us to move it around freely without it falling over all the time. Plus, it allowed us to angle it whenever we needed to.
I had to take a photo of them doing that… lol
From there, we troubleshot different spots, different heights and different angles.
I needed to get a hold of angles and composition while also making sure lighting was proper.
I had them move tables, couches, stack stools on top of each other…
I’m sure they spent a little time after cleaning up (sorry, not sorry haha).
Once the iPhone was ready, we had to take care of posing. This sometimes required them to get back up and move the phone again, then sit back down. It was quite the process!!
The best part about all this?? I myself just sat on my couch using the facetime capture button and watched them do all the work!! Haha
We spent about two hours doing this, from chatting at the beginning, to signing off at the end. We all had a blast!!
Then it was my turn… I had to get my butt off the couch and get to work.
I needed to select the images, airdrop them to my computer, and edit them. Once that was done, I airdropped them back to my backup phone, which I used in all the photos taken with my professional camera.
Each one of the backgrounds are real. I used random things around the house, from furniture, blankets, balloons, paper, stools, coffee mugs and cutting boards. I’ve even used toilet paper and file folders. Each photo is real, even though photoshopping them onto different backgrounds would have probably been a lot easier! lol
I love the creativity it gives after the fact. Plus, it allows me to provide a high quality image that can be used online or printed to almost any size! Hailey and Guerino already told me that one of these images will be used on their wedding day for guests to sign. How cool is that? I can’t wait to see which one they pick!
Sorry, I know this is a long blog… I swear I’m almost done!
Going forward, I plan on giving all wedding couples booked with me (that have to postpone) the option of either doing a virtual photoshoot or one in person (when it’s safe to do so) on the day of their original wedding date.
Even when I go back to work, I don’t plan on stopping these! They’re super fun and allow me to travel the world and meet people from everywhere. They are super special!
If you would like to book a session, contact me! These sessions take the same amount of time from beginning to end as a regular session, but for right now they are discounted quite a bit! Make sure to contact me as soon as you can to book yours.
Here are some of my favourites from Hailey and Guerino’s Original Wedding Day day!
